I love being involved on campus and staying busy with different activities

Makaila Lance

For Makaila Lance, stepping onto Hiram College’s campus for the first time felt like coming home. “The moment I stepped onto campus I knew it would be my home away from home,” she recalls. “I was welcomed with nothing but smiles and open arms.”

Originally from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Makaila is a psychology major and a proud member of the Class of 2028. In just her second year, she’s already made a lasting impact on campus through her enthusiasm, leadership, and deep love for the Hiram community.

Makaila is actively involved in nearly every corner of campus life. She serves as Vice President of both Student Senate and PRYSM, works in the Career Center and Welcome Center, and even holds office hours to connect with fellow students. This past summer, she also took on the role of Orientation Leader, helping new Terriers find their footing. “I love being involved on campus and staying busy with different activities,” she says. “Welcoming new students was such a fun and rewarding experience.”

building community

When she’s not planning events or working, Makaila enjoys spending time with friends—whether that’s hanging out in the Kennedy Center, relaxing at the Career Center, or finding a quiet study spot in the library.

Her favorite academic experience so far has been participating in the Eclectic Scholars Honors Program. “I really enjoy meeting new people and getting involved,” she says. “Being in the program has pushed me to grow academically and personally.”

Makaila’s passion for Hiram runs deep. “I care deeply about seeing our school become the very best it can be—full of energy, students, and events that bring our community together,” she explains. “I want to create positive change on campus and help students feel connected, supported, and proud to call Hiram home, just like I do.”

Through her many experiences, Makaila has learned valuable lessons about resilience and self-confidence. “Something I’ve learned about myself during my time at Hiram is that I can do hard things,” she says. “Hiram has shown me that it’s okay to take on challenges even if I’m nervous. With such a supportive campus community behind me, I’ve realized I can accomplish anything I set my mind to.”

Looking ahead, Makaila hopes to attend graduate school after completing her degree, though she’s still exploring which path to take. She credits Hiram for helping her find her voice and confidence. “Hiram is teaching me how to advocate for myself,” she says. “It’s such a welcoming place where I feel comfortable expressing who I am and standing up for what I need.”

When asked to sum up her Hiram experience in three words, Makaila didn’t hesitate: Transformative. Rewarding. Unforgettable.

I want to create positive change on campus and help students feel connected, supported, and proud to call Hiram home, just like I do.
