What are the degree requirements for the finance and accounting degree program?

In order to earn your finance and accounting degree from our college, there are 31 hours of core classes that need to be completed, 16 hours of required correlative courses, and 9 hours of accounting and financial management electives. Accounting and Finance Degree Program Summary

The accounting degree program, embedded in the liberal arts, focuses on developing students’ analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills and emphasizes the integration of theory and its practical application. You will be strongly encouraged to extend your learning beyond the classroom setting through course projects in the field, internships, and study abroad programs.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills lead to success in our accounting and finance degree program and the field itself, so you will experience a concentration on writing in all your courses. This emphasis prepares you with both the technical and analytical skills employers want.

Our accounting students also have the opportunity to join professional organizations, including the Ohio Society of CPAs and the Institute of Management Accountants, introducing them to the industry before they graduate. Students may also take part in our Investment Club that promotes the principles of sound investing and educates students about the stock market.

Ways to Get Involved

While working toward their accounting and finance degree, our students will take a variety of required courses and electives, including such possibilities as:

Federal Taxation Accounting

Cost Management
Advanced Accounting
Business Law

Students must maintain a C- or better within their core courses, except for the ACCT 48000 Senior Capstone, which must also be completed for graduation. A GPA of 2.0 is required for the major, and students must earn at least a C- within a prerequisite course before advancing to a higher course.

A total of 9 elective hours will be selected for the major, with options chosen in consultation with an advisor. Additionally, students may double major in two separate disciplines within the Scarborough School of Business & Communication only with permission from the program faculty. A proposal will need to be completed by the student outlining how they will approach the two disciplines and satisfy their requirements.
