Becoming an intervention specialist is not just a job, but a fulfilling career full of teaching and caring for all types of students. The intervention specialist program at Hiram is unique, with four different types of field experiences starting your second year, and new courses: career transition, introduction to neurodiversity, and assessment and evaluation under IDEA.

Students in the intervention specialist program are prepared to teach students in kindergarten through grade 12 with mild to moderate needs. This is a single-licensure degree program.

Students who take part in our program will learn at our beautiful campus in Hiram, Ohio, conveniently located centrally to Cleveland, Akron, and Youngstown.

The Education Program at Hiram College is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Individual licensure programs are approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

Our INTERVENTION SPECIALIST Degree Program Summary

Our northeast Ohio intervention specialist program focuses on critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity, and through these aspects students prepare to teach students with a range of ages and disabilities. Hiram teacher candidates learn by doing, both out in the field and in campus classrooms, with faculty supporting them as they engage in deep and connected experiences with learners. 

Teacher candidates are in the field four times and as early as their second year. Students will complete the following field experiences: 

  • Mild/moderate needs field experience for K-12 during their second year 
  • Intervention internship in their third year 
  • Student teaching K-8 intervention specialist 
  • Student teaching 9-12 intervention specialist 

The education program is nationally accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Individual licensure programs are approved by the Ohio Department of Higher Education. 

You will be able to obtain licensure in the following area:

  • Intervention specialist (Mild / Moderate) – This is valid for teaching kindergarten through grade 12. Students who complete the intervention specialist licensure program graduate with an intervention specialist major with specialization in mild/moderate needs.

To get started, you’ll want to first check out our general requirements for any of our degrees as well as specific requirements for the intervention specialist courses. In order to take part in our intervention specialist program, you will need to meet the following requirements: 

  • Achievement of 3.0 grade point averages in: cumulative, professional education, and licensure content area(s). Any GPA below a 3.0 will result in an intervention plan.
  • Candidates must earn a grade of “C” (2.0) or higher in all courses in the professional education core. In addition, they must maintain a minimum 2.6 average professional education core GPA.
