Working in animal rehabilitation at the Field Station showed me what I want from life and that this is what I’m made to do.

Fallon Clarke

From the moment she stepped onto campus, Fallon knew that Hiram would be her home. “The campus just drew me in and instantly felt home,” she said.

For Fallon, Hiram’s campus expands beyond the classroom and down the road to the James H. Barrow Biological Field Station. At the Field Station, Fallon is heavily involved working in the Animal Care and Husbandry unit. There, she helps care for orphaned and injured animals like opossums, ducks, raptors, groundhogs, and more. In the unit, students learn from staff how to rehabilitate injured animals, help animals with infections like West Nile Virus, and learn to release rehabilitated animals back into the habitat. Students learn skills such as supportive care including fluid therapy and administering medication, handfeeding, “soft release” techniques, and more!

discovering her passion

“My passion is animals. Working in animal rehabilitation showed me what I want from life and that this is what I’m made to do,” Fallon said. Aside from her passion for animal care, Fallon is also exploring other avenues during her time at Hiram. Her favorite class at Hiram was Introduction to Psychology with Dr. Michelle Nario-Redmond. This course helped Fallon to find an interest in the human psyche, something she hadn’t explored before alongside her interest in the animal kingdom. She also credits Dr. Nario-Redmond for creating a welcoming classroom environment and making the class interesting and engaging for students.

When she’s not at the Field Station or in class, Fallon loves to study in the clock tower of the Library. It’s a quiet and picturesque setting to study while still being able to enjoy the beauty of campus. She also ventures to the Village Park near campus for time outdoors.

When asked to describe Hiram in just a few words Fallon said this about her Hiram experience thus far:

“Eye opening, tough, rewarding.”
