Ava Scott ’28
Hometown: Cortland, OH
English Major, Writing Minor
I’ve had more experiences in my one year at Hiram than I’ve had in my whole life, and that has expanded my worldview.
Ava first found Hiram College because it was close to home and had unique semester offerings like the Hiram Plan, which intrigued her.
As a natural creative, Ava has found herself gravitating towards many of Hiram’s clubs and organizations – such as Theatre Guild, Dungeons and Dragons club, and Writers in Residence. The Writers in Residence cohort at Hiram College visits the Portage County Juvenile Detention Center weekly, where Hiram students act as mentors to foster genuine, long-lasting relationships with the residents; and free the voices of incarcerated youth through the distribution and showcase of their creative writing. Being a member of Writers in Residence and teaching creative writing courses and creative expression to the juvenile residents has been instrumental in Ava’s growth as a Hiram student. “It’s one of the most fulfilling parts of my campus life,” said Ava.

As a freshman, Ava pushed herself to try new experiences and get out of her shell. “My self-confidence has boosted since my time at Hiram, and I’ve become more assured in my sense of self,” said Ava. She describes Hiram as a caring and supportive community where she has been able to expand her worldview and explore new opportunities.
Through her coursework, Ava has also learned tools to enhance her writing skills and her drive to be outgoing. One course in particular stands out as a monumental moment in Ava’s time as a student – “Craft and Technique: Poetry” with Dr. Willard Greenwood, professor of English.
“That course developed my writing skills a lot, and I found the courage to share my writings with others through it,” Ava said. “I also got to express myself in a way I haven’t really done before and encouraged me to try new things and be more open.”
Some of Ava’s favorite memories have been getting dressed up and attending PRYSM’s Pride Prom with her friends and studying in her favorite study room on the third floor of the Library (she’s not telling which one though!).
Ava is using her time at Hiram to explore each of her passions more acutely and truly diving into what excites her.
