Hiram really is more like a big family than a school.

The Nursing Program experience

Nursing students take prerequisite courses during their first and second year at Hiram, preparing them for the different aspects of nursing. In the spring semester of sophomore year, Hiram nursing students are placed into a clinical rotation. Picoult was put on a medical-surgery floor at University Hospitals. “It has been a great experience getting to know patients and understanding what I’m learning in a more hands-on experience. It’s been really gratifying, boosted my knowledge on nursing, and put in perspective what nursing is all about,” said Picoult.

While Picoult has remained dedicated to her studies, she appreciates the uniqueness of Hiram’s nursing program, specifically how nursing students become integrated on campus during their first year. “Getting to have the larger campus experience and then be integrated into the smallness of the nursing community was really helpful because that way we weren’t just thrown into nursing and kept from the other side of campus. They allowed us to experience what regular college is like and get to know the people around us,” said Picoult. She is grateful for this experience which has allowed her to form a good circle of friends as part of the Hiram College community.

Becoming part of the campus community

Picoult is involved in many ways on campus. She has served as an Orientation Leader, helping to welcome new students to the Terrier family. Additionally, Picoult is a nursing representative for the sophomore class, the Senator of Health, Wellness, and Accessibility in Student Senate, a part of SAFE committee, Mental Health committee, and the Historian of PRYSM.

PRYSM is the all-inclusive LGBTQ+ club on campus, welcome to members of the LGBTQ+ community, allies, and anyone who wants to join. The club hosts several campus events throughout the year– two of the biggest events being National Coming Out Day and Pride Prom. “It’s a great inclusive event where people can come and be themselves,” Picoult said.
