I feel as if the wide diversity of classes at Hiram has helped to prepare me as a well-rounded individual.

Working at the James H. Barrow Biological Field Station has been a formative experience for junior Abigail Jordan. Jordan helps to manage the aquaponic and hydroponic systems at the Field Station. These systems are a closed-loop food production system that combine the raising of fish at low stock densities to ensure good water quality and the concept of growing plants in water, relying on fish waste to supply nutrients to the plants and provide a clean water supply.

Jordan also enjoys working with and learning about the animals at the Field Station in the Animal Care & Husbandry unit. “I am extremely passionate about my work at the field station as well as how psychology can play a part in it,” she said. Combining her major with her interests in animal care.

Building community

After graduating, Jordan hopes to either pursue further education in forensic psychology or work as a wildlife officer in the local area. Jordan credits her time at Hiram for her growth as a person and her deeper understanding of where her interests lie.

“I have changed a lot since I first started taking classes and working at Hiram. I have found some of my closest friends here,” Jordan said.
