Biology and Environmental Studies Major

Jacob Fergis spends most of his time working at the James H. Barrow Biological Field Station where he works as an animal care steward. Jacob is a senior with majors in biology and environmental science.

As someone who has always loved the outdoors, nature, hiking, and camping, Jacob chose Hiram because, “it is close to home and because of the Field Station, which I knew would be full of great opportunities,” he said.

Fergis has career goals of working in ecology or environmental science. These goals tie in directly with his favorite class he’s taken at Hiram, fly fishing.

“I really enjoyed Fly Fishing class I took in the 3-week. I got to read good literature and learn a new outdoors skill. We also got to go fly fishing a few times,” Jacob said.

Jacob’s advice for prospective students: “Hiram is great if you like a small school in a small town. I’ve had some great experiences at the Field Station and learned a lot from the staff and students there.”
