Three Hiram accounting and financial management students recently had the opportunity to attend the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) annual student leadership conference in Pittsburgh, October 20 through 22. Hosted annually, the IMA student leadership conference brings together accounting students from across the country to learn from industry leaders, cultivate their professional skills, network with recruiters, and meet like-minded students.

Students were able to participate in events such as on-site industry tours of different businesses, informational sessions on becoming a Certified Management Accountant, resume and interview workshops, breakout sessions on different accounting specialties and more.

Hiram’s accounting club is affiliated with the Cleveland East chapter of the IMA. Through student fundraising in the accounting club and support from the IMA, Hiram students, Tanner Allison, Michael Corsillo, and Camdyn Miller, were able to attend the conference free of charge.

“I really enjoyed the speech given by Charlie Batch.  He gave a good perspective from an athlete’s point of view when it comes to business and what to do when you lose that natural athlete identity you’ve had for your whole life.  He shed great light on the transition period from an athlete to a normal person,” said Michael Corsillo.  “Overall, I really enjoyed the networking opportunities, career path exposure, and the ability to develop as a professional.”

Attending conferences like this is only one of the many ways accounting students at Hiram practice their skills outside the classroom. With Hiram’s emphasis on experiential learning, students are always pushing to find new experiences that fit their interests. In the last year, Hiram’s accounting students have been hired for internships at Park Place Technologies, PeaseBell CPA’s, Lyle & Associates, Sikich LLC, Corrigan Krause and PWC. In the past students have also landed meaningful internships with Universal Polymer & Rubber, RSM, NMS CPA’s, Cohen & Company and the Hiram College Business Office.
