As we prepare for Hiram College’s Commencement on Saturday, May 13, 2023, honoring the Class of 2023, we connected with several of our graduating seniors to share some memories and advice from their time on the Hill.

Xavier Reyero was brought to Hiram from Los Angeles, California as a football recruit and is majoring in art and design in the School of Arts, Humanities & Politics.

How did you first find Hiram College, and what made you interested in attending?

“I was recruited for football. Hiram saw me out there for a camp and my coach helped me get to where I needed to be.  I was really excited to come to Ohio.”

What did you want to achieve by attending college?

“I wanted to be one of the first people in my family to get a bachelor’s degree. That was something really important to me growing up.”

Why did you choose your major?

“My uncle is a professional graphic design, and I always wanted to follow in his footsteps.”

What did you learn about yourself during your time at Hiram?

“I’ve learned to be responsible for myself, take care of myself, and do what I need to do. One of the first days I was here, I called my dad and told him that I can’t do this. He made me stay and said that I’m going to get through this and that I’m going to graduate. And I did. I fulfilled that. That’s something I can now hold dear to my heart.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“I’m one of those kids that don’t have an answer for that. I am going to go back home and figure out my next steps. I’ve thought about leaning on my uncle and seeing if I can find some experience there.”
