The Hiram College women’s swimming & diving team defeated both Malone University and Ursuline College in a tri-meet, while the Terrier men fell to Malone in a dual matchup in the home opener at Alumni Memorial Pool.
The Terrier women defeate the Pioneers, 103-102, and also beat the Arrows, 132-54. The women had three individual event winners and one winning relay team. JuniorSamantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley) won the one-meter dive with a score of 123.55 points. Fellow junior Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) touched the wall first in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:44.22 just ahead of second place by 25 one-hundreths of a second. Sophomore Rachel Patten (Catalia/Margaretta) rounded out the individual event winners with a top time of 4:59.44 in the 400-meter freestyle. The team of Buckley, junior Rebecca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local), freshman Meredith Fitschen-Brown (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) and junior Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) posted a combined time of 2:02.27 to take top honors in the 200-meter free relay.
On the men’s side, the top overall performance was a second-place finish by senior Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) in the 100-meter free with a time of 59.29. The men also had a trio of third-place finishes by sophomore Christian Kelley (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) in the 200-meter free (2:22.85), sophomore Mark Stanke (Dover) in the 50-meter free (25.86 seconds) and senior Job Fields (Chillicothe) finished third in both the 100-meter backstroke (1:09.48) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:19.32).
The swim teams will return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 9) to take on Baldwin Wallace University and Notre Dame (Ohio) College in the final competition of the Cleveland City Tour at Alumni Pool. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
