HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s swimming and diving team defeated Malone University, 60-34, and Ursuline College, 57-23, in a non-conference tri-meet, while the men fell to Malone, 110-54, in the home opener tonight (Friday, Nov. 4) at Alumni Memorial Pool. [Meet Results]
With the pair of wins, the Terrier women improve to 2-2 overall in dual meet competition. The men fall to 0-3 overall on the season.
The women were led by freshman Rachel Buckley (Amherst/Elyria Catholic) who won a pair of events in the 50-meter freestyle (29.77 seconds) and the 100-meter free (1:05.43). Also touching the wall first was senior Caitlin McCurley (Apple Valley/Granite Hills) in the 800-meter free with a time of 10:34.47. Fellow senior Becca Szanto (Bainbridge/Kenston) came in first in the 200-meter free with a mark of 2:31.09. Senior Amelia Dorschel (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) posted a winning time of 1:17.49 in the 100-meter butterfly. The women has recorded a top time in the 200-meter free relay. Sophomore Jessie Gruden (Sagamore Hills/Western Reserve Academy), freshman Becca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local), junior Meraya Mitchell (Chicago, Ill./Von Steuben Metro) and Szanto teamed up to record a top-time of 2:07.16.
The men had one event winner in junior James Degroff (Cuyahoga Falls) who captured the 50-meter free with a time of 25:47 seconds. He also came in second in the 100-meter free in a time of 58.69 seconds.
The Hiram swim teams return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 5) when they travel to Bethany, W.Va. for a non-conference dual meet against Bethany College. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
