The Hiram College swimming and diving teams faced off against Defiance College and Chatham (Pa.) University in a non-conference meet at Alumni Memorial Pool. The women beat Chatham, 58-53, and also defeated Defiance, 66-43 in a tri-meet, while the men won against Defiance with a score of 103-27.
The Hiram women are now 3-5 overall after tonight’s win in dual meet competition. The men improve to 2-4 overall with the win.
The women had three individual event winners and one multi-event winner. Freshman Rachel Patten (Castalia/Margaretta) captured a pair of events touching the wall first in the 800-meter freestyle (10:09.42) and the 400-meter free (4:56.37). In addition, sophomore Carly Daniels (Mesa, Ariz./Dobson) held a time of 1:05.82 to win the 100-meter freestyle. The women also had a winning relay in the 200-meter medley relay. The team of freshman Marian Bade (Macungie, Pa./The Perkiomen School), sophomoreSamantha Polmanteer (Berkley, Mich./Berkley), sophomore Becca Wright (New Carlisle/Northwestern Local), and sophomore Marisa Celeste (Rocky River/Gilmour Acad.) posted a time of 2:24.10.
For the men, junior Job Fields (Chillicothe/Chillicothe) led the team with two wins in the 200-meter free and 200-meter backstroke. He placed first with times of 2:22.41 and 2:36.28 respectively. The men proceeded to dominate in six other events as well. In the 200-meter individual medley, junior Ryan Astalos (Bainbridge/Kenston) took first with a time of 2:32.27. Senior James DeGroff (Cuyahoga Falls/Cuyahoga Falls) won the 50-meter free with a time of 24.99 seconds. In the men’s one-meter dive, freshmanGreg Summers (Lancaster, N.Y./St. Mary’s) posted a score of 117.70 points. The 200-meter butterfly was won by freshman Chris Boardman (Westlake/Westlake), who touched the wall with a time of 2:40.96. Freshman Danny Essel (Euclid/Euclid) won out the 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2:48.77. In addition, the men also had a winning relay team in the 200-meter medley relay. Team members included: Boardman, Fields, Essel, and freshman Chance Gray (Shippensburg) with a combined time of 2:17.10.
The Hiram swim teams will travel to Grove City, Pa. for the annual Grove City College Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Nov.30-Dec. 1. The first event on Friday is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
