BUFFALO, N.Y. — Senior All-North Coast Athletic Conference midfielder Ernestina Zappa(Brooklyn/Laurel) scored a pair goals and assisted on another as the Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated Medaille (N.Y.) College, 3-1, in non-conference action in Buffalo, N.Y.
With the win, the Terriers end the first weekend of the season with a 1-1 overall record. The Mavericks fall to 0-1 overall to begin their season.
Following a scoreless first half, Zappa put Hiram on the board with her first goal (unassisted) at the 46:20 minute mark to put the Terriers up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, sophomore forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) tallied her second goal in as many days at the 48:00 mark, with an assist from Zappa, to extend the lead to 2-0. Medaille, cut the Hiram lead in half with a score during the 57th minute from Candis Kapuscinski. But the Terriers regained a two-goal edge with Zappa’s second goal during the 69th minute as Hiram went on to claim the 3-1 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) played all 90 minutes in net and got her first win of her collegiate career. She improves to 1-1 overall on the season. She allowed the lone goal and made three saves.
Hiram will travel to Westerville for a non-conference matchup against Otterbein University on Wednesday, Sept. 5. The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
