TIFFIN, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team tied Heidelberg University, 1-1, tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 27) in a non-conference game in Tiffin. [Game Stats]
With the tie, the Terriers are now 3-3-1 overall and the Student Princes are now 3-5-1 overall for the season.
Hiram scored first, late in the first half, with a goal from freshman forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) at the 43:39 minute mark. It marked Zuponcic’s second goal of the season and was unassisted. Neither team scored any goals in the final minute-and-a-half as the Terriers took a slim 1-0 edge into the locker rooms.
In the second half, Hiram maintained its lead until the 75th minute when Heidelberg’s Kelsey Hogan found the back of the net to even the score at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked at a goal apiece at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime period, the Student Princes recorded the only shot taken, but could not score the game winner, sending the game into a second overtime. In the final 10 minutes, Heidelberg would again tally the only shot attempt, but did not find the mark as the game ended in a 1-1 stalemate after 120 minutes.
In goal for Hiram, freshman Lisa Silvestro (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) played the entire game and is now 1-1-1 overall on the year. She allowed just the lone goal and made eight saves.
Hiram will travel to Delaware for a North Coast Athletic Conference game against Ohio Wesleyan University on Friday, Sept. 30 as part of a soccer doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team. The women will face the Battling Bishops at 5:30 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
