HIRAM, OHIO — Junior midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) scored two goals and added an assist as the Hiram College women’s soccer team shut out Spalding (Ky.) University, 3-0, this afternoon (Sunday, Sept. 4) in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-0 overall and the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2 overall for the season.
Zappa tallied her first goal of the game at the 28:06 minute mark of the first half on a penalty kick to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. The margin remained a goal in favor of Hiram the remainder of the first half as the Terriers took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
In the second half, Zappa found the net again during the 73rd minute with an assist from freshman defenseman/forward Jessica Berube (Barberton/Norton) to put Hiram up by the score of 2-0. Hiram added an insurance goal shortly after when Berube scored her first collegiate goal at the 76:39 mark. Zappa was credited with an assist on the Berube goal. A trio of goalkeepers in freshman Lisa Silvestro (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas), junior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) and freshman Jocelyn Schmidt (Kent/Roosevelt) held Spalding scoreless as the Terriers outshot the Golden Eagles, 25-1, for the game and posted a 3-0 shutout victory.
Silvestro started the game and picked up her first collegiate win as netminder to improve to 1-0 overall on the season. She played the entire first half and made one save. Valaitis played 40:20 of the second half and did not face any shots, while Schmidt played the final 4:40 and did not face any shots.
Hiram will seek its third straight victory when it hosts Otterbein University on Wednesday, Sept. 7 in a non-conference matchup at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
