Otterbein University tallied three goals in the second half as the Hiram College women’s soccer team fell to the Cardinals, 3-0, in a non-conference game in Westerville.
Following tonight’s game, Hiram falls to 1-2 overall and Otterbein is now 2-1 overall for the season.
The Cardinals outshot the Terriers, 9-0, in the first half, but no goals were scored as the teams remained scoreless at the break.
In the second half, the stalemate was finally broken at the 59:24 minute mark when Otterbein’s Jillian Strimbu found the back of the net to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead. Strimbu added another goal shortly after during the 65th minute to increase the lead to 2-0. Otterbein sealed the victory with its final score of the game at the 69:46 mark en route to the 3-0 shutout.
In net for Hiram, freshman goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) started and played the majority of the game allowing no goals and had three saves in 59:13. Senior Kate Valaitis(Lewis Center/Olentangy) played 30:47 but gave up all three goals while making two saves.
Hiram will play its next three games at home, including two games this weekend, beginning with a non-conference matchup against the University of Mount Union on Friday, Sept. 7 in the home opener. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. The Terriers will also host Waynesburg (Pa.) College on Saturday, Sept. 8 with kickoff slated for 1 p.m.
