Under new head coach Michael Cracas, the Hiram College women’s soccer team posted a dominant 8-0 win over Thiel (Pa.) in its season opener on Wednesday evening.
The Terriers are now 1-0-0 on the young season, while the Tomcats are 0-1-0.
Junior Emily Syrjala (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Prep) led the Terrier offensive attack with her first career hat trick.
Junior Katelyn Mauch (Parma, Ohio/Normady) got the Terriers on the board just 3:07 into the contest, firing a shot over the keeper.
Junior Allie Glatt (Cincinnati, Ohio/Seton) would find the back of the net at the 11:54 mark, beating the keeper to the lower left to give Hiram a 2-0 lead.
With just over four minutes left in the first half, Syrjala broke free and found the back of the net. Fox recorded her second assist of the night on the play.
In the second half, Rowe scored for the second time when she sprinted towards the goal and finished a cross from Glatt with just over 30 minutes to play.
Glatt would then add her second goal of the night when she stole the ball from the Tomcat defense. She took a shot that was saved, but followed it up with another shot into the net.
Syrjala would score the final two goals of the night to complete her hat trick. Her first came off of a corner kick by junior Ashley Myer (Parma, Ohio/Parma) in which she headed the ball into the net. She would then score off of a rebound with just under four minutes to play.
Senior goalkeeper Kailie Reed (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) made five saves in goal for her 10th career shutout.
The Terriers owned a 32-8 edge in shots and took eight corner kicks, compared to five for Thiel.
Hiram will return to action over the weekend at the Gettysburg (Pa.) Cup. The Terriers will take on the host Bullets on Saturday at 7 p.m. and McDaniel (Md.) on Sunday at 4 p.m.
