Freshman Robynn McGroarty (Oakville, Ontario/Loyola Catholic) scored her team-leading ninth goal of the season, but the Hiram College women’s soccer team fell, 3-1, to Denison University in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Granville.
Denison (5-6, 1-1 NCAC) scored quickly and often recording all three of its goals within the first five minutes of the game. The Big Red took the lead just 1:47 into the game with a goal from Andrea Witte. Just under two minutes later, Dension found the back of the net again with a score from Anne Denz to give the Big Red a 2-0 advantage. The final goal of the first half came during the fifth minute when Abby Kerbaugh found the back of the net for Denison. Neither team added any additional goals the remainder of the period as the Big Red took a commanding 3-0 lead into the locker rooms.
In the second half, Hiram (7-4, 0-2 NCAC) wasted no time getting on the board with McGroarty’s goal on a breakaway at the 47:21 minute mark, narrowing the gap to 3-1. But the lone goal was all the scoring for Hiram as the Terriers lost 3-1 to the Big Red.
In net for Hiram, sophomore Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) played all 90 minutes and allowed three goals and had five saves. With the loss, she is now 6-4 overall for the season.
The women’s soccer team will host Oberlin College next Saturday, Oct. 12 in a NCAC game at Charles A. Henry Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
