Senior defenseman Breann Mason (Mentor/Lake Catholic) scored a pair of goals in the second half, but it would not be enough as the Hiram College women’s soccer team fell to the University of Mount Union, 4-2, in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex.
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 1-3 overall and the Purple Raiders improve to 2-1 overall for the season.
Mount Union jumped out to a commanding lead with a pair of unassisted goals in the first half. Jackie Lowdermilk got Mount Union on the board with a goal at the 13:44 minute mark for an 1-0 lead. Ashley Sams then followed that up with a goal during the 22nd goal to extend the lead to 2-0 at the half.
Following a two-hour rain and lightening delay, Mount Union increased the lead to 3-0 with a score by Shannon Evans at the 57:33 mark. Mason ended the possible shutout with her first goal during the 71st minute on a direct kick to make the score 3-1. But the Purple Raiders got the goal back shortly after at the 75:45 mark off the foot of Amanda Tamerlano putting Mount Union back up by three goals, 4-1. Mason tallied the final goal of the game on another direct kick during the 87th minute, but the scoring would come too late as Mount Union went on to the 4-2 victory.
In goal, freshman Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) started the game, but would only play 13:44 when she suffered an injury that took her out of the game. She would finish with a goal allowed and no saves. Senior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) came on and played the remaining 76:16 giving up three goals and posted three saves.
Hiram will return to action tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 8) in a non-conference game against Waynesburg (Pa.) College. The game is scheduled to begin at noon at the Charles A. Henry Field.
