HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated Hilbert (N.Y.) College, 4-2, today (Saturday, Sept. 3) in the season and home opener at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
The Terriers open the season with a 1-0 mark and the Hawks fall to 0-1 overall to start the season.
Hiram struck early in the first half with a score by freshman forward/midfielder Sarah Condon (Powell/Bishop Watterson) at the 7:45 minute mark with an assist from senior midfielder/defenseman Kayla Durichko (Brunswick) to give the Terriers an early 1-0 lead. Hiram added to its lead just under 10 minutes later when junior defenseman/midfielder Lyndsay Witmer (Ashland/Hillsdale) found the back of the net during the 18th minute to put Hiram up 2-0. Freshman defenseman/forward Jessica Berube (Barberton/Norton) was credited with an assist on the Witmer goal. Hilbert cut the lead in half shortly after with a goal at the 18:54 mark narrowing the gap to 2-1. But Hiram got some breathing room with a goal from freshman forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) near the end of the period during the 33rd minute to give the Terriers a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, the Hawks again pulled to within a goal with a score at the 57:43 mark making the margin 3-2. Hiram then put the game away when freshman midfielder/forward Tiffany Marchewka (Chesterland, Mich./L’Anse Creuse North) scored a goal during the 67th minute with an assist from freshman midfielder Kelsey Martin (Austintown/Fitch) as the Terriers went on to claim the 4-2 victory.
In net for Hiram, junior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) got the start, and the win, to begin the season with a 1-0 record. Freshman Lisa Silvestro (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) came on to play the second half. Both goalkeepers allowed one goal and made two saves in 45 minutes each.
Hiram returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 4) when it hosts Spalding (Ky.) University at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
