Hamburg, N.Y. — Senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Claire Conner (Aurora) scored a goal and an assist as the Hiram College women’s soccer team defeated Hilbert College, 4-2, today (Sunday, Sept. 19) in a non-conference game in Hamburg, N.Y. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 4-4 overall and the Hawks fall to 2-5 overall for the season.
Hiram began the scoring in the first half with a breakaway goal by Conner, her second goal of the season, at the 18:19 minute mark to put the Terriers up 1-0. Hilbert evened the score at 1-1 late in the period with a goal from Alyssa Hulbert on a free kick during the 33rd minute. Just over a minute later, Hiram sophomore midfielder/forward Stephanie Takeuchi (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) knotched her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 33:59 mark, giving the lead back to the Terriers at 2-1. But the Hawks tied the game again with another goal by Hulbert on a penalty kick during the 39th minute that evened the score at 2-2 at halftime.
In the second half, Hiram tallied two scores beginning with a goal by senior Kendra Dean (Chesterland/West Geauga), her second of the season and what turned out to be the game winner, at the 51:31 mark making the score 3-2. Senior defender/midfielder Melissa Sharpe (Eastlake/Willoughby South) added an insurance goal late in the period during the 85th minute as Hiram would go on to win by the score of 4-2. Conner would be credited with an assist on the Sharpe goal.
Senior Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester Central) played all 90 minutes in net for Hiram and claimed her fourth win of the season to improve to 4-3 overall. She allowed two goals and made five saves.
Hiram will host non-conference opponent Heidelberg University on Thursday, Sept. 23 at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
