HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team fell to The College of Wooster, 2-1, tonight (Wednesday, Oct. 19) in a North Coasth Athletic Conference game at Charles A. Henry Field. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 3-10-2 overall and 0-5-1 in the NCAC. The Fighting Scots improve to 7-6-2 overall and 2-1-2 NCAC.
Wooster struck early in the first half, scoring just 4:20 into the game on an unassisted goal by Erin Davison to give the Scots the early 1-0 lead. The Scots added a second goal during the 18th minute on an own goal to extend the margin to 2-0. The two Wooster goals would be the only scoring in the opening period giving the Scots a 2-0 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half, Wooster looked to be headed to a possible shutout when Hiram rallied late with a goal by freshman forward/midfielder Samantha Zuponcic (Mantua/Crestwood) at the 84:46 mark on a rebound from an initial shot by fellow freshman defenseman/forward Jessica Berube (Barberton/Norton) to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. But the Terriers could not tally the game-tying goal in the final minutes as the Scots went on to the 2-1 final.
Freshman goalkeeper Lisa Silvestro (London, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) started the game and played the first 45 minutes. She allowed two goals and would suffer the loss, dropping her to 1-6-2 overall for the season. Despite the two goals, Silvestro recorded seven saves. Junior netminder Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) played the final 45 minutes giving up no goals while making three saves.
Hiram will host Case in a non-conference game on Friday, Oct. 21 at Henry Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
