ERIE, PA. — The Hiram College women’s soccer team was defeated by Moravian (Pa.) College, 3-2, in double overtime today (Sunday, Sept. 5) in the final game of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State-Behrend in Erie, Pa. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers are now 1-2 overall for the season. Moravian improves to 2-0-1 overall.
Moravian scored the game’s first goal at the 23:00 minute mark off the foot of Kim Gogel for a 1-0 advantage. About five minutes later, sophomore midfielder/forward Stephanie Takeuchi (Milton, Ontario/E.C. Drury) tied the game at a 1-1, her second goal of the season, during the 28th minute with an assist from senior midfielder Kendra Dean (Chesterland/West Geauga). Neither team would score again during the remainder of the half, resulting in a 1-1 tie at the break.
In the second half, Moravian regained the lead midway through the period with a goal from Jenna Stickle, making the score 2-1. The lead wouldn’t last long as senior two-time All-North Coast Athletic Conference forward Claire Conner (Aurora) tallied the game-tying goal just 27 seconds later at the 74:43 mark with a second assist from Dean. But that would be all the scoring in regulation as the game headed to overtime, tied at 2-2.
Hiram outshot Moravian, 3-0, in the first overtime period, but could not find the back of the net, as both teams remained deadlocked at 2-2 and the game would go to a second overtime.
With under a minute remaining in the final overtime period, Moravian broke the stalemate with the game-winning goal off the foot of Arielle Caldas that was set up by Stickle, giving Moravian a 3-2 overtime victory.
In goal for Hiram, senior Emily Bristol (Worcester, N.Y./Worcester Central) played all 109:04, but suffered the loss and is now 1-2 overall. She allowed three goals and made two saves.
Hiram will host Manchester (Ind.) College on Friday, Sept. 10 at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
