Sophomore Katelyn Mauch (Parma/Normady) scored in the 81st minute as the Hiram College women’s soccer team topped Ohio Wesleyan 1-0 in its regular season finale on Saturday.
The Terriers end their season at 6-11-1 and 1-6-1 in the NCAC, while the Battling Bishops finish 1-14-2, 0-8-0.
The Terriers honored their seven seniors before the start of the match.
Mauch took a pass from sophomore Kristen Verel (Aurora) and beat the keeper to the far post at the 80:23 mark of the match.
Hiram came out attacking early, taking six shots in the first 30 minutes of play.
OWU responded with a few scoring chances in front of the net, but they were denied by the Terriers defense, keeping the scoreless tie intact.
In the second half, the Terriers had a chance to find the back of the net in the 63rd minute. Sophomore Ashley Myer (Parma) fired a free kick that hit the cross bar. An ensuing shot by sophomore Abbey Rowe (Mt. Orab/Lynchburg) squirted loose in the box before Battling Bishop goalie Rachel Charles was able to control it for the save.
After Mauch’s goal, the Terriers defense was tough and denied any scoring chances for Ohio Wesleyan.
Junior goalie Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) made four saves in goal for her fourth shutout of the season.
Hiram outshot the Battling Bishops 20-12 and held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
