GARRETTSVILLE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team shut out Thiel (Pa.) College, 3-0, today (Tuesday, Sept. 20) in a non-conference game at Brosius Park in Garrettsville. [Game Stats]
Following today’s game, the Terriers improve to 3-2 overall for the season and the Tomcats fall to 3-3-2 overall.
Hiram scored the only goal of the first half at the 25:59 minute mark off the foot of junior midfielder/defenseman Chelsea Ulmer (Toledo/Sylvania Northview), in what would turn out to be the game winner, as the Terriers led 1-0 at halftime. Junior midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) recorded her second assist of the season on the Ulmer goal.
In the second half, the Terriers added an insurance goal at the 64:00 mark when freshman midfielder/forward Natasha Blonsky (Calabasas, Calif./Agoura) scored her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 2-0. Hiram put the game away shortly after with its final score of the game during the 72nd minute from freshman midfielder/forward Tiffany Marchewka (Chesterfield, Mich./L’Anse Creuse North) and an assist from Zappa, her second of the game and team-leading third of the season, as the Terriers went on to win by the final of 3-0.
In net, junior Kate Valaitis (Lewis Center/Olentangy) got the start and played the entire first half to pick up her second win of the season to improve to 2-1 overall for the year. In 45 minutes, she stopped the only shot she faced. Freshman Lisa Silvestro (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) started the second half and played 40 minutes allowing no goals and recorded two saves. Fellow freshman Jocelyn Schmidt (Kent/Roosevelt) played the final five minutes giving up no goals and had no saves in limited action.
Hiram will begin a four-game road trip beginning with a stop in Greencastle, Ind. for a matchup against North Coast Athletic Conference newcomer DePauw University on Saturday, Sept. 24. The game will be the conference opener for the Terriers with kickoff scheduled for noon.
