The Hiram College women’s soccer team scored five goals in the first half as the Terriers went on to beat Marietta College, 5-1, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.
Hiram (6-2) capitalized early scoring its first goal just 5:08 into the game off the foot of freshman Alison Cowell (Bridgeton, Mo./Duchesne) with a helper by fellow freshman Robynn McGroarty (Oakville, Ontario/Loyola Catholic) to give the Terriers the early 1-0 lead. Hiram added to its lead during the 18th minute when McGroarty scored a goal of her own, her team-leading seventh of the season, to make the score 2-0. Cowell was credited with an assist on the McGroarty goal. Marietta (2-6) got on the board at the 21:42 minute mark to cut the lead in half, 2-1. But the Terriers answered the Pioneer goal with another score during the 26th minute by freshman Allie Glatt (Cincinnati/Seton) to regain the two-goal advantage, 3-1. Hiram went on to add two more scores in the period from All-North Coast Athletic Conference junior Kelsey Martin (Austintown/Fitch) during the 34th minute and sophomore Michaela Edmond (Sherman, Conn./New Milford) during the 37th minute to lead 5-1 at the break. Freshman Kaitlyn Mauch (Parma/Normandy) was given an assist on the Martin goal and freshman Genna Atkins (Eureka, Mo./Eureka) was credited with an assist on the Edmond goal.
In the second half, Hiram outshot Marietta, 5-1, but neither team would find the back of the net in the final 45 minutes as the Terriers went on to post the 5-1 victory.
In goal for Hiram, sophomore Kailie Reed (Wadsworth) played all 90 minutes and got the win to improve to 6-2 overall for the season. She allowed just the lone goal and made two saves.
Hiram will host Otterbein University in a non-conference game on Sunday, Sept. 29 at Henry Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
