DELAWARE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s soccer team was defeated by Ohio Wesleyan University, 8-1, today (Friday, Sept. 30) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Delaware. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers fall to 3-4-1 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC. The Battling Bishops improve to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0 NCAC.
OWU tallied the games opening goal at the 16:21 minute mark to grab the early 1-0 lead. Hiram quickly evened the score a little more than a minute later during the 18th minute when junior midfielder Ernestina Zappa (Brooklyn/Laurel) found the back of the net. The Bishops regained the lead near the end of the half at the 39:53 mark to take a 2-1 advantage into halftime.
It would be all OWU in the second half as the Bishops scored goals on six different occassions including a marker during the 50th minute to extend the lead to 3-1. OWU then blew the game open with goals during the 56th, 64th, 66th, 70th, and 86th minutes to cruise to the 8-1 final.
Freshman goalkeeper Lisa Silvestro (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) started the game and played 76:21, but suffered the loss and is now 1-2-1 overall on the year. She allowed seven goals and made 12 saves. Fellow freshman Jocelyn Schmidt (Kent/Roosevelt) played the final 13:39 giving up one score and tallied two saves.
Hiram will travel to Rochester, N.Y. for a newly scheduled non-conference matchup against St. John Fisher College on Sunday, Oct. 2. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
