Freshman Allison Spitz (Hudson) scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal with 52 seconds remaining in the game, one of two goals scored on the day, as the Hiram College women’s lacrosse team beat Houghton (N.Y.) College, 5-4, in a non-conference game at Charles A. Henry Field.

Hiram (2-2) scored the first goal of the game on a man up advantage when freshman Rebecca Goetz (Buffalo, N.Y./Frontier) found the back of the net with an unassisted marker at the 27:44 minute mark of the first half.  The Terriers added two more goals in the period from seniorLacey Zerner (Canton/Jackson) at the 26:25 mark and from freshman Hannah Schaefer(Kent/Roosevelt) with 14:02 left to play.  Houghton (0-3) would not score a goal in the first 30 minutes as Hiram took its three goal lead into the locker rooms.

In the second half, the Highlanders got on the board with a goal at the 27:53 mark to cut the deficit to 3-1.  Hiram regained the three-goal edge when Spitz recorded her first goal of the game with 19:36 left in the contest making the score 4-1.  Houghton then made its run scoring three consecutive goals with the last one coming with 7:23 left to play to even the score at 4-4.  Hiram got the ball back in its offensive zone with just over a minute-and-a-half to play and Spitz later tallied the go ahead goal with 52 seconds on the clock to give the Terriers a 5-4 advantage.  The Hiram defense held Houghton from netting the equailizer in the final seconds to claim the 5-4 victory.

Hiram was led offensively by Spitz with the two goals on five shots.  Schaefer, Zerner and Goetz rounded out the point scorers with a goal each.

In goal, freshman Rebecca Greenhouse (Pittsburgh, Pa./Winchester Thurston) picked up the win allowing four goals and making 15 saves in 60 minutes.

Hiram will travel to Alliance for a non-conference matchup against the University of Mount Union on Tuesday, Mar. 19.  The game is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
