The Hiram College women’s lacrosse team topped Hilbert (N.Y.) 13-11 on Saturday to record its fourth win of the season, which is a new program record.
The Terriers won three games in their first two seasons of existence.
Sophomore Autumn Osgood (Hyde Park, Vt./Lamoillle Union) paced Hiram with four goals. Osgood now has 25 goals, which ties the single season scoring record.
Osgood got Hiram on the board just 2:02 into the contest to give the Terriers the early 1-0 edge.
Hilbert responded with three goals to jump in front 3-1 with 22:00 left in the first half.
Gillentine found the back of the net at the 19:40 mark to cut Hiram’s deficit to 3-2, but the Hawks scored just 11 seconds later to push their lead back to 4-2.
Goetz and Gillentine would score back-to-back goals to knot the score at 4-4 with 17:18 left in the first half.
Yet again, Hilbert responded just 14 seconds later to jump back in front 5-4.
But Hiram dominated the rest of the half, scoring four unanswered goals to take a 8-5 lead into the break.
The Hawks scored 25 seconds into the second half, but sophomore Kayla Jenkins (Solon) and Osgood scored two straight goals for the Terriers to give them a 10-6 lead with 14:14 left in the contest.
After another Hilbert goal, senior LeAunna Martin (Akron/Ellet) scored to make the score 11-7 in favor of Hiram.
The Hawks came right back with two goals, but Gillentine and Goetz scored 53 seconds apart late in the contest, to put Hiram back up 13-9 and put the game away.
Freshman Rachel Metcalf (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) made four saves in goal.
The Terriers held a 28-22 advantage in shots, but Hilbert picked up 29 ground balls, compared to 18 for Hiram.
The Terriers will be back at it on Monday, when they host Franciscan in a non-conference contest at 7 p.m. The squad will also celebrate Senior Night before the start of the game.
