ncac-annivThe Hiram College women’s basketball team was picked to finish eighth in the 2013-14 North Coast Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll that was released today.

Defending NCAC Tournament and NCAA Division III National Champion DePauw (Ind.) University was picked as the favorite with 79 points and eight-of-nine first-place votes.  Wittenberg University was second with 64 points and Kenyon College rounded out the top three with 63 points and one first-place vote.

Hiram posted a 9-17 overall record last season and qualified for the NCAC Tournament for the sixth straight year.  The Terriers will return three starters and 12 letterwinners in 2013-14 and will be led by a trio of seniors in Alexis Kemper (Centerville), Danielle Day (Newbury) andMarisa Thomas (Lorain/Amherst).

Kemper will be the team’s top returning scorer who averaged 7.7 points per game last season while shooting 39.7 percent (73-of-184) from the field.  She was also the team’s top three-point threat leading the team in triples made (45), attempts (113) and shooting percentage (39.8).  Kemper was also amongst the team leaders in blocked shots with 12.  Day was the team’s top rebounder with 163 boards (6.3 rpg.) and was second in steals with 34.  Offensively, Day averaged 5.5 ppg. and shot 32.5 percent (51-of-157) from the floor.  Thomas averaged 3.5 ppg. as a junior and was third on the team in rebounding with 83 boards.

Also expected to contribute more this winter will be juniors Kelsey KoskinenTaylor Ratliffand sophomores Christy GriffinSierra Day and Preshus Hawthorne.

Hiram will begin the 2013-14 season on Friday, Nov. 15 when the Terriers host the two-day Victory Promotions Terrier Tip-Off Classic.  Hiram will take on Hilbert (N.Y.) College in its first game of the tournament on Friday which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
