The Hiram College women’s basketball team lost to Denison University, 62-43, in the North Coast Athletic Conference and season finale in Granville.
Freshman guard Kayla Yost (Sandusky/Perkins) scored 10 of the team’s 18 points in the first half, but would be held to just two points in the final 20 minutes. Hiram (5-20, 1-15 NCAC) trailed by only three points, 9-6, early in the first half and would later take the lead on back-to-back buckets by senior guard Danielle Day (Newbury) and Yost to make the score 10-9 at the 14:39 minute mark. Denison (18-6, 10-5 NCAC) came back to regain control with a 12-1 scoring run to make it a 21-11 ball game with 8:46 left in the half. The Big Red lead hovered around the 10-point margin the rest of the period which included a 29-18 advantage at the break.
Yost began the scoring for Hiram with a jumper to start the second half, making the score 29-20. But Denison increased its lead with an ensuing 7-0 run for a 36-20 margin with 17:15 to go. The Big Red continued to pull away and would eventually lead by as many as 21 points on several occasions, including a 62-41 mark with a minute to play. Hiram recorded the final points of the game on a jumper by junior guard Taylor Ratliff (Berea/Columbia), but Denison would claim the 62-43 victory.
Denison shot 36.1 percent (22-of-61) as a team for the game and was led in scoring by the duo of Gretchen Staubach and Jordan Holmes with 13 points each. Holmes also went on to grab 16 rebounds and blocked 10 shots for a triple-double. MaryMargaret Habel was the only other Big Red player in double figures with 10 points.
Hiram ended the game shooting 33.3 percent (17-of-51) from the field and had two players score in double digits in Yost and Day. Yost scored a team-high 12 points on five-of-11 shooting (45.5 percent), while Day tallied 11 points. Sophomore forward Christy Griffin (Middlefield/Cardinal) recorded a team-high 12 rebounds.
