HIRAM, OHIO  —  The Hiram College women’s basketball team suffered a 65-49 loss to No. 15 nationally-ranked Denison University today (Saturday, Jan. 29) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium.  [Game Stats]

With the loss, the Terriers drop to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC.  The Big Red remain undefeated with a 19-0 overall record and 8-0 NCAC.

Both teams battled back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the first half with neither team leading by more than two points.  The teams were deadlocked at 10-10 with 11:25 left to play before halftime, when Denison began to make its run.  The Big Red outscored Hiram, 12-4, to take the lead with a 22-14 edge at the 6:11 mark.  Hiram made it a one-possession game thanks to an ensuing bucket by sophomore guard/forward Amy Geisman (Middleburg Heights/Midpark) and a three-pointer by senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) making the score 22-19.  But Denison regained control with a 10-3 run to end the half and posted its largest lead of the period with a halftime score of 32-22.

In the second half, Denison quickly jumped out to a sizeable advantage with an 8-2 run to begin the half and boast an 18-point margin, 42-24, with 17:37 left to play.  Hiram pulled to within 10 points, 58-48, on a triple by sophomore guard Calysia Smyers (Akron/Coventry) with 5:06 to go, but the earlier Big Red lead would be enough for Denison to secure a 65-49 win.

Denison shot 40.0 percent (24-of-60) from the field and held Hiram to just 28.6 percent (16-of-56) shooting from the field.

The Big Red were led by Nicole Coggins with a game-high 18 points on eight-of-11 shooting (72.7 percent).  She was followed by Christina Myers with 15 points.  Completing the list of high scorers for Denison was Shaina Kaiser who tallied 14 points in addition to grabbing a game-high 13 rebounds.

Hiram had one player score in double-figures in Smyers with 10 points on three-of-seven shooting (42.9 percent), including three-of-six (50.0 percent) from behind the arc.

Hiram will host The College of Wooster on Wednesday, Feb. 2 at Price Gym.  The game will be part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team.  The women will tip-off against the Fighting Scots at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
