HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Wittenberg University, 72-61, today (Saturday, Feb. 19) in the North Coast Athletic Conference and regular-season finale at Price Gymnasium on senior day. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers end the regular season with a 12-13 overall record and 4-10 in the NCAC. The Tigers cap their regular season with a 12-13 overall record and 7-7 NCAC with the win.
Both teams played a competitive first half for the majority of the period with six lead changes and seven ties. Neither team would lead by more than three points until late in the half when a Wittenberg 7-0 scoring run gave the Tigers some breathing room and an eight-point lead, 35-27, with 1:49 left before halftime. Following a pair of free-throws by senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) on the ensuing Hiram possession to cut the deficit to six points, Wittenberg tallied the final points of the half to extend the lead back to eight with a halftime score of 37-29.
In the second half, Wittenberg got off to a fast start with a 9-2 run to begin the half and take a commanding 15-point edge, 46-31, at the 16:34 mark. The Tigers maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 16 points on several occassions, including a 71-55 margin with 1:08 to go. Sophomore guard Chelsea Kovach (Lakewood) scored the final six points for Hiram to end the game with a pair of three-pointers, but Wittenberg already had the game in hand and went on to win by the final of 72-61.
Wittenberg shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the field and held Hiram to 33.3 percent (23-of-69) shooting.
The Tigers were led by Lauren Cassel who scored a game-high 17 points on six-of-13 shooting (46.2 percent). She also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Katherine Hueter was second with 15 points in addition to grabbing 11 boards. Lyndsey Clark was third with 13 points and Ashanta Robinson rounded out the high scorers with 12 points.
Hiram was led by Cowan with 16 points on six-of-13 shooting (46.2 percent). Kovach scored 12 of her 14 points from behind the three-point line to round out the high scorers for the Terriers. In addition, junior Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick) tallied a team-high 10 rebounds.
Hiram will take part in the NCAC Tournament which is set to begin on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The Terriers will be the sixth seed in this year’s tournament and will face No. 3 Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa. Gametime is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
