HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Oberlin College, 64-49, today (Saturday, Feb. 12) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 12-11 overall and 4-8 in the NCAC. The Yeowomen improve to 8-15 overall and 3-9 NCAC.
Oberlin led for the majority of the first half, but only led by a point, 16-15, at the 5:18 mark. The Yeowomen then ended the half with a 12-2 scoring run to increase the lead to 11 points, 28-17, at the break.
Hiram opened the second half with a three-pointer by senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) to cut the deficit to eight points, 28-20. But Oberlin answered with a 9-2 run to extend the lead to a sizeable 15 points, 37-22, with 17:29 left to play. The Terriers made a late charge and pulled to within seven points, 48-41, with 7:01 to go on a jumper by junior guard Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick). But the momentum ended there as Oberlin outscored Hiram, 16-8, to end the game, including a streak of eight unanswered points en route to the 64-49 victory.
Oberlin had four players in double-figures led by Syrea Thomas with a game-high 18 points on seven-of-17 shooting (41.2 percent). Kelly Warlich was second with 16 points in addition to grabbing a game-tying high 12 rebounds. Allison Gannon scored 12 points and Allison Anderson added 11 points.
Hiram had one player in double-digits in Cowan who ended the game with 12 points on four-of-14 shooting (28.6 percent) to go along with a game-tying high 12 boards.
Hiram will travel to Gambier for a NCAC game against Kenyon College on Wednesday, Feb. 16. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
