HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team suffered a 71-32 loss against No. 7 nationally-ranked DePauw (Ind.) University today (Saturday, Jan. 7) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Price Gymnasium. [Game Stats]
Following today’s game, the Terriers drop to 4-9 overall and 1-4 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 11-1 overall and 4-0 NCAC.
Hiram led 7-5 early in the game, but an ensuing 18-0 scoring run by DePauw that lasted eight-and-a-half minutes gave the Tigers command of the game with a score of 23-7 with 9:22 left to play in the opening half. The Terriers shot just 26.1 percent (six-of-23) from the floor in the first period and trailed 34-14 at the intermission.
DePauw continued to builds its lead in the second half with a series of scoring runs as the Hiram shooting stayed cold. The Tigers led by as many as 39 points on two occassions, including the final score of 71-32.
The Tigers an even 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor and held Hiram to just 26.7 percent shooting (12-of-45) for the game. The Tigers also out-rebounded the Terriers, 39-24. Individually, DePauw had a balanced attack with the leading scoring being Emma Ondik with 10 points on four-of-five shooting (80.0 percent). Fourteen other Tiger players would find their way into the scorebook in the win.
Hiram was led by the duo of junior guard Chelsea Kovach (Lakewood) and freshman forward Samantha Morford (Jefferson) with eight points each. Senior All-NCAC guard Kelsey Durichko (Brunswick) was second with seven points.
Hiram will travel to Wooster for a conference game against The College of Wooster on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The game will be part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team. The women will take on the Fighting Scots at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
