The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by No. 1 nationally-ranked DePauw (Ind.) University, 74-32, in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Greencastle, Ind.
DePauw (13-0, 4-0 NCAC) took control of the game right from the start and never looked back. The Tigers held Hiram (5-9, 0-5 NCAC) scoreless for the first 9:11 while jumping out to a 29-0 lead at the 10:49 minute mark. The Terriers finally got on the board with a three-pointer by junior guard/forward Alexis Kemper(Centerville) with 10:09 left in the period. The Tigers maintained their dominating lead the remainder of the half and had a 37-12 advantage at the break.
DePauw continued its impressive play in the second half and eventually led by as many as 40 points on numerous occassions, including a 70-30 margin with 1:33 left in the game en route to the 74-32 final.
DePauw ended up shooting 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field and had two players score in double-figures led by Kate Walker with 11 points while shooting five-of-eight (62.5 percent) from the floor. Alex Gasaway was second in scoring with 10 points.
Hiram shot 36.8 percent (14-of-38) overall and was led in scoring by the duo of senior forward Brenna Host(Seven Hills/Normandy) and sophomore forward Samantha Morford (Jefferson) with eight points each.
Hiram will look to end its four-game losing streak when it hosts The College of Wooster on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at Price Gymnasium. The game will be part of another basketball doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team. The women will tip-off against the Fighting Scots at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
