GRANVILLE, OHIO — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by Denison University, 102-54, today (Saturday, Dec. 11) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the NCAC. The Big Red remain unbeaten and improve to 9-0 overall and 1-0 NCAC.
Hiram scored the game’s first points on a successful three-pointer by senior guard Jess Cowan (Hiram/Crestwood) to give the Terriers an early lead. But Dension quickly took over the lead and never looked back. The Big Red recorded their first double-figure lead at the 13:16 mark with the score of 22-11 on their way to leading by as many as 34 points on two occassions, inlcuding a halftime score of 57-23.
In the second half, Denison continued to pull away and posted its largest margin of 49 points, 102-53 with 1:42 left to play, en route to the 102-54 victory.
Hiram shot a respectable 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the floor, but Denison would convert an impressive 60.6 percent (43-of-71) of its shots, including 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point range.
The Big Red had five players score in double-digits led by Shaina Kaiser with 20 points on nine-of-16 shooting (56.3 percent). Christina Myers was second with 17 points, followed by Haley Dahlgard with 16 points. Serefina Nuzzo added 15 points and Nicole Coggins rounded out the Denison high scorers with 11 points.
Hiram had one player in double figures in junior guard Tiffany Shields (Bedford Heights/Bedford) with a game-high 21 points on nine-of-15 shooting (60.0 percent). It is the third straight game that Shields has scored 20 or more points.
Hiram will look to get back on track when it hosts Waynesburg (Pa.) College in non-conference game on Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Price Gymnasium. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
