GREENCASTLE, IND. — The Hiram College women’s basketball team was defeated by No. 5 nationally-ranked DePauw (Ind.) University, 85-43, today (Saturday, Feb. 4) in a North Coast Athletic Conference game in Greencastle, Ind. [Game Stats]
With the loss, the Terriers drop to 7-14 overall and 4-9 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 20-1 overall and 13-0 NCAC.
DePauw never ended up trailing in the game, but Hiram stayed with its opponent in the early minutes of the opening half, trailing by no more than five points in the first 5:39. Shortly after, the Tigers gained some breathing room outscoring the Terriers, 12-6, to pad the lead to 11 points, 23-12, with 6:34 remaining in the first period. DePauw went on to increase its lead to as many as 18 points, 37-19, and would take a sizeable advantage into the locker rooms with a halftime score of 39-22.
In the second half, DePauw continued to pull away as the Tigers shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) from the field in the final 20 minutes as Hiram shot just 30.0 percent (six-of-20). DePauw quickly exceeded the 20-point margin in the early minutes and went on to cruise to the 85-43 win.
For the game, DePauw shot 52.5 percent (32-of-61) from the field and held Hiram to 31.1 percent shooting overall (14-of-45). Individually, the Tigers were led by Katie Aldrich with a game-high 20 points on eight-of-10 shooting (80.0 percent). Ali Ross was second in scoring at 18 points and Savannah Trees added 10 points.
The leading scorer for Hiram was junior guard Chelsea Kovach (Lakewood) with nine points on three-of-eight shooting (37.5 percent).
Hiram will return home to play its next three games at Price Gymnasium beginning with a NCAC game against Allegheny (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The game will be part of a basketball doubleheader with the Terrier men’s team who will also take on Allegheny. That game is scheduled to start at 8 p.m.
