ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Hiram College volleyball team ended the Nazareth (N.Y.) College Invitational with a pair of match victories today (Saturday, Sept. 11) on the final day of competition in Rochester, N.Y. The Terriers defeated SUNY-New-Paltz, 3-1, and defeated Fredonia (N.Y.) State, 3-1.
Following today’s action, the Terriers are now 7-4 overall for the season.
In the match against New-Paltz, Hiram jumped out to the early 1-0 match lead with a 25-13 victory in the first set. The Terriers would then took a close set two, but would prevail by the score of 25-22 to take a commanding 2-0 match advantage. New-Paltz avoided the sweep in the third set, winning, 25-15, but Hiram put the match away by capturing the fourth set, 25-20, for the 3-1 overall victory.
In the final match of the tournament against Fredonia, Hiram dropped the first set, 25-15, and fell behind 1-0 in the match. But it would be all Hiram the remainder of the match by winning three straight sets, 25-23, 25-21, and 25-18, to claim a 3-1 match win.
Following the tournament, sophomore outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) was the lone Hiram player selected to the All-Tournament team.
Hiram will travel to Wooster to compete on the final day of The College of Wooster Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Terriers will play a pair of matches, beginning with a matchup against Otterbein College at noon. Hiram will then take on Capital University to end the day at 1:30 p.m. The Terriers faced Capital earlier in the season and defeated the Crusaders, 3-1.
