
Freshman Marissa Jay (Parma/Padua Franciscan) had a match-high 27 kills in Hiram’s 3-2 come-from-behind win against John Carroll.
The Hiram College women’s volleyball team won three straight sets to hand John Carroll University its first loss of the season, 3-2, in a non-conference game at Price Gymnasium in the home opener.
With the victory, Hiram improves to 3-1 overall for the season and John Carroll falls to 4-1 overall.
The Terriers dropped the first two sets, 22-25 and 22-25, to fall behind 2-0 in the match. Hiram won the third set, 25-13, to prolong the match and evened the match at two games apiece with a thrilling fourth set, 28-26. In the fifth and deciding set, Hiram put the match away with a final of 15-5 for the 3-2 come-from-behind match victory.
Individually, freshman Marissa Jay (Parma/Padua Franciscan) had a match-high 27 kills and sophomore Lindsay Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) also finished in double-figures in kills with 14. Setting up the offense was junior Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) with 56 set assists. In additoin, freshman Nikollette Scruggs (Barberton) had a game-high five service aces.
Defensively, junior Regina Zyle (Clevelan/Beaumont) tallied a team-best 28 digs, followed by Moore with 10 digs. Lindsay Brewer and sophomore Logan Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) both posted a team-high seven blocks (one solo and six assists).
Hiram will travel to Marietta for the Marietta College River City Classic on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 6-7. The Terriers will square off against Bethany (W.Va.) College on Friday in their first match on Friday beginning at 4 p.m. Hiram will then face Frostburg (Md.) State at 8 p.m.
