ERIE, PA. — The Hiram College volleyball team posted victories against Marietta College and D’Youville (N.Y.) College to capture the Penn State-Behrend Invitational title today (Saturday, Sept. 10) in Erie, Pa. The Terriers defeated the Pioneers, 3-0, and beat the Spartans, 3-0, on the final day of competition.
The Terriers posted a 4-0 record at the invitational and improves to 5-4 overall for the season.
In Hiram’s first match of the day against Marietta, Hiram won the first two sets with scores of 25-15 and 25-11 to take a 2-0 overall match lead. The third match would be a bit more heavily contested, but it was the Terriers who would come out on top, winning by the score of 26-24 to claim a 3-0 straight-set sweep.
Against D’Youville, Hiram again jumped out to an early decisive lead capturing the first two sets by the scores of 25-11 and 25-17. The Terriers then won in convincing fashion in the third set, 25-9, to take their second three-set victory and emerge as invitational champions going unbeaten in four matches during the two-day event.
Following the day’s matches, senior All-Region senior outside hitter Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) was named to the All-Tournament Team and senior setter Taylor Summerfield (Warren/Howland) was tabbed the Most Valuable Player.
Hiram will end its road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 14 against Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Lou Higgins Center.
