TOWSON, MD. — The Hiram College volleyball team began the 2012 season with a pair of victories on the first day of the “Gio” Giovanazzi Memorial Tournament hosted by Goucher College in Towson, Md. The Terriers defeated host school Goucher in their first match, 3-1, and then beat Cabrini (Pa.) College in the nightcap, 3-0.
In the match against Goucher, Hiram tooked the early lead winning the first set, 25-18. The Gophers then captured a close second set by the final of 26-24 to even the match at a set apiece. The Terriers then captured the match victory by winning sets three and four with the scores of 25-18 and 25-11.
Against Cabrini, the two teams played a pair of competive sets to begin the match, but it would be Hiram who’d come out on top, 25-21 and 25-23, to take a 2-0 match lead. The Terriers put the match away capturing the third set, 25-13, to go on to win, 3-0, and begin the season with a 2-0 overall record.
Hiram will conclude the two-day event tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 2) with a pair of matches beginning with Johns (Md.) Hopkins University at noon. The Terriers will then have to wait and see who they would play in their fourth and final match of the tournament later in the day.
