HIRAM, OHIO — Senior Hiram College volleyball players Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) and Kristi Opfer (Garrettsville/Garfield) have been named honorable mention American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-Great Lakes Region. [2011 AVCA All-Region Teams]
Bryan and Opfer have helped the Terriers post a 26-8 overall record and made its 11th straight trip to the NCAC Tournament, including a 10th consecutive appearance in the title match. The Terriers will also be making their fourth appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament which begins on Friday, Nov. 11.
Bryan, a 5’9″ outside hitter, adds to her postseason accolades with her second straight All-Region selection. Earlier this week, she also earned first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference honors for the second consecutive season and it marked her third All-Conference award overall. Going into the match tomorrow, Bryan leads the team in kills with 342 (3.35 kills per set) and has a .304 hitting percentage which is third best on the team. In addition, Bryan is amongst the team leaders in service aces with 22. Defensively, she is second in digs with 300 (2.94 digs per set) and is third in total blocks with 53 (11 solo and 42 assists).
Opfer, a 6’1″ middle hitter, earns All-Region honors for the first time in her career. She also adds to her list of posteason awards having been selected first-team All-NCAC for the second straight time earlier this week which was also her third overall All-Conference award. To date, Opfer is second on the team in kills with 270 (2.35 k/s) with a team-tying high .366 hitting percentage. Opfer leads the team in service aces with 34 and is second on the squad in total blocks with 106 (11 solo and 95 assists). Opfer has also tallied 77 digs (0.67 d/s) from her middle hitter position.
Hiram will face Stevenson (Md.) University on Friday, Nov. 11 in its regional of the NCAA Division III Tournament on the campus of Neumann University in Aston, Pa. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
