The Hiram College volleyball team ended the 2013 regular season with a pair of victories against Houghton (N.Y.) College and SUNY-Brockport in a tri-match hosted by SUNY-Brockport in Brockport, N.Y.
With the victories, the Terriers improve to 20-9 overall for the season. Hiram recorded its fifth-straight 20-win season and 10th year with 20 or more victories in the last 11 seasons.
In the match against Houghton, Hiram won in straight sets with the scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-20. The offense was led by freshman Marissa Jay (Parma/Padua Franciscan) who had 12 kills. All-North Coast Athletic Conference junior Jennifer Yardas (Moon Twp., Pa./Moon) and sophomore Lindsay Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) were tied for second with nine kills each. All-NCAC junior Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) set up the offense with 33 set assists. Defensively, senior Danielle Day (Newbury) recorded 22 digs and freshman Laura Kelly (Massillon/Jackson) had seven digs. At the net, four players tied for the team-lead in blocks with two each. Moore and freshman Nikolette Scruggs (Barberton) tallied a solo and an assisted block, while Jay and All-NCAC sophomore Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) both had two solo blocks.
Against SUNY-Brockport, won by the scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-15. Lindsay Brewer led the team in kills with nine, followed by Yardas with eight kills. Moore was again the team’s top setter with 32 assists. On defense, Yardas posted a team-high six digs and Jay led the team in blocking with two solo and three assists. Mortimer and Logan Brewer(Barberton/Manchester) were tied for second with a solo and three assists each.
Hiram will next compete in the NCAC Tournament which begins on Friday, Nov. 8. The Terriers will be the number two seed and will take on seventh-seeded Kenyon College at 7 p.m. Wittenberg University will serve as host of this year’s tournament as the top seed with all matches being played in Springfield.
