SPRINGFIELD, OHIO — The Hiram College volleyball team was defeated by No. 4 nationally-ranked Wittenberg University, 3-0, today (Saturday, Oct. 9) in a North Coast Athletic Conference match and were also defeated by non-conference opponent Bluffton University, 3-1, as part of a tri-match in Springfield. Following today’s matches, the Terriers are now 14-9 overall and 5-1 in the NCAC. The Tigers improve to 18-2 overall and 8-1 NCAC. The Beavers are now 16-5 overall.
In the match agains the Terriers, Hiram lost to Wittenberg by the scores of 17-25, 19-25 and 16-25. Leading the offense for Hiram was sophomore outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) with eight kills. Junior All-NCAC outside hitter Shaina Bryan (South Euclid/Brush) was second with seven kills. Senior setter Alyssa Coundourides (Brunswick/Parma-Padua Franciscan) tallied a team-best 16 set assists.
On defense, senior All-NCAC libero/outside hitter Kim Sage (Bellevue) recorded a team-high 16 digs and junior defensive specialist Ashley Pike (Mission Viejo, Calif./Mission Viejo) added 11 digs.
In the match against Bluffton, Hiram jumped out early by winning the first set with the score of 25-20. But the Beavers then took the next three sets, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-18, to clinch the 3-2 match victory. No individual statistics for Hiram are available at this time.
Hiram will host Kenyon College on Wednesday, Oct. 13 in a conference match at Price Gymnasium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
