The Hiram College volleyball team captured its second and third straight match victories with wins against Kenyon College, 3-0, in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener and SUNY-Fredonia, 3-1, in a non-conference match as part of a tri-match at Price Gymnasium.
In the match against Kenyon, Hiram (10-4, 1-0 NCAC) defeated the Ladies in straight sets, 25-11, 25-23 and 25-18. Sophomore Logan Brewer (Barberton/Manchester) and freshmanMarissa Jay (Parma/Padua Franciscan) led the Terrier offense with 10 kills each. Setting up the offense was junior Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) who had 34 set assists. In addition, freshman Laura Kelly (Massillon/Jackson)had three service aces.
Defensively, junior Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) had a team-high seven digs, followed by senior Danielle Day (Newbury) and sophomore Katie Barton (Newbury) with five apiece. Up front, All-NCAC sophomore Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) had six total blocks (six assists) with Logan Brewer, Moore and Jay each adding four blocks.
Against SUNY-Fredonia, Hiram captured the first set, 25-19, but the Blue Devils came right back to even the match with a second set victory, 25-23. The Terriers then posted victories in the third and fourth sets, 25-17 and 25-22, to go on to the 3-1 match win.
Jay paced the Hiram offensive attack with 20 kills, followed by sophomore Lindsay Brewer(Barberton/Manchester) with 15 kills. Moore tallied all but two of the team’s set assists, finishing the game with 51.
Day led the defensive effort for the Terriers with 20 digs. Zyle also finished in double-figures in digs with 12. Logan Brewer posted eight total blocks (one solo and seven assists), followed by Lindsay Brewer and Mortimer with five each.
Hiram will host Heidelberg in a non-conference dual match on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Price Gym. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
