Current senior Hiram College men’s basketball player Justin Lonis (Mentor/Perrysburg) and graduated senior Justin Wisniewski (Macedonia/Nordonia) have been invited to participate on the USA Athletes International Basketball Team in Europe.
The duo will play a total of five games with stops in the United Kingdom, France, Belgium and Holland from May 26, 2013 to June 4, 2013. The team is sponsored by USA Athletes International which is a non-profit organization that allows NCAA Division III athletes to travel overseas and compete in competition. Lonis and Wisniewski will join other players from the state of Ohio in addition to representatives from other states that include: Illinois, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Wisconsin.
Lonis played in all 25 games for the Terriers in 2012-13 and served as a team co-captain. He had an impressive 49.4 shooting percentage for the season (41-of-83) and was amongst the team leaders in rebounding with 86 (3.4 rebounds per game). Lonis grabbed 29 offensive boards, which was fourth-highest on the team. In addition, he was the leader in field goal percentage in the North Coast Athletic Conference and amongst the leaders in all of NCAA Division III for December and January shooting 61 percent on 33-of-54 shooting. He recorded three games scoring 10 or more points during the year and had a season-high eight rebounds on two occasions. Lonis is a double major in accounting and communication with a minor in entrepreneurship and is a Dean’s List student. He is also a member and Treasurer of Lambda Pi Eta, a Hiram honor society for communication.
“It’s an honor to be able to represent our country and school by playing on this trip,” said Lonis. “This opportunity is also a great way to showcase how talented division three athletes are and our ability to compete with players of any level.”
Wisniewski recently completed his four-year playing career at Hiram. In his final season, Justin started every game and scored 113 points (4.5 points per game) while shooting 43.0 percent (37-of-86) from the field. He led the team in assists for the second straight season with 99 and also led the team in steals with 29. His 99 assists ranked fourth most in the NCAC and recorded nine games with five or more helpers, including a season-high eight assists against Ramapo (N.J.) College. In addition, Wisniewski ranked amongst the team leaders in rebounding at 95 (3.8 rebounds per game).
For his career, Wisniewski scored 191 points with a 40.0 shooting percentage (64-of-160). He tallied 237 career assists and was the NCAA Division III Statistical Champion in assist-to-turnover ratio in 2011-12 as a junior. In addition, Justin recorded 58 steals defensively. Wisniewski graduated from Hiram this past spring with a degree in accounting and computer science. He was also a team co-captain and the recipient of the team “Terrier Award” which is given by the coaching staff for outstanding performance on and off the court.

“This trip provides a unique opportunity for our players to experience various cultures, international basketball and be an ambassador for our institution,” said Head Coach Steve Fleming.
Lonis and Wisniewski will play their first game on Tuesday, May 28 against London Pioneers in London, England. They will then play another game in London on Wednesday (May. 29) before traveling to France for a pair of games in Paris on Thursday (May 30) and Friday (May 31). The trip will wrap-up with a game in Amsterdam on Saturday (June 1).
