HIRAM, OHIO — The Hiram College men’s soccer team tallied a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the game to clinch a 2-0 victory against John Carroll University tonight (Tuesday, Sept. 14) in a non-conference game at the Hiram Soccer Complex. [Game Stats]
With the win, the Terriers improve to 2-4 overall and the Blue Streaks fall to 3-2 overall for the season.
John Carroll would have the advantage in shots in the first half, 6-1, but neither team would get on the scoreboard as the game remained tied at 0-0 at the break.
In the second half, the game looked to be headed into overtime, but a late scoring opportunity for Hiram was capitalized upon by sophomore All-North Coast Athletic Conference midfielder Ryan Greenhill (Solon) who scored the game’s first goal at the 85:33 minute on a free kick to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead. Less than three minutes later, Hiram put the game away thanks to a goal by freshman midfielder Manolo Angel (Mexico City, Mexico) during the 89th minute en route to the 2-0 shutout win. Fellow freshman midfielder Andy Harding (Bath/Revere) was credited with an assist on the Manolo goal.
In net for Hiram, senior goaltender Joe Tatum (Georgetown, Cayman Islands/St. George’s School) played all 90 minutes and got the win, improving him to 2-4 overall for the season. He also recorded his first shutout victory of the season allowing no goals and making five saves.
Hiram will host Calvin (Mich.) College in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Hiram Soccer Complex. The game will be part of a Terrier soccer doubleheader with the women’s team. The Hiram women will play host to Wilmington College at 1 p.m., followed by the men at 3 p.m.
