The Hiram College volleyball team defeated John Carroll University, 3-1, in non-conference action in University Heights. The Terriers defeated the Blue Streaks by the scores of 25-23, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-19.
Following the outcome of the match, the Terriers improve to 4-1 overall and the Blue Streaks fall to 1-4 overall for the season.
Leading the Hiram offense was senior outside hitter Ariel Pund (Macedonia/Walsh Jesuit) with a game-high 19 kills. Junior outside hitter Ashley Venable (Youngstown/Liberty) was second with eight kills. Setting up the offense was sophomore setter Tierra Moore (Canton/Canton South) with a game-high 39 assists. In addition, Pund also led the team offensively in service aces with three.
On defense, sophomore Regina Zyle (Cleveland/Beaumont) was one of three Hiram players in double figures in digs with a game-tying high 13. Junior Danielle Day (Newbury) was second with 11 digs and Pund added 10 digs. Freshman middle hitter Emily Mortimer (Mogadore/Field) posted a game-best seven total blocks (four solo and three assists).
Hiram will host the annual Hiram Invitational on Friday-Saturday, Sept. 7-8 at Price Gymnasium. The Terriers will take on Frostburg (Md.) State University in its first match and home opener at 3 p.m. followed by a matchup against Capital University at 7 p.m.
